Keeping Life Alive

2013 Mugical Morocco

Most inspiring and life changing experience.

Our Journey is May 31-June 16/ 2013.  For me it’s one tour however there are 2 optional parts:

This is the first 10 days , see “extension (below) for the “World sacred Music Festival-Fez” for the second part June 9-16/2013

Day 01,May 31: Casablanca

Upon your arrival in Casablanca airport you will be met by your guide Jaouad who will transfer you to your hotel.  A late afternoon orientation tour of Casablanca will be offered to everyone in the group who can make it.  This will feature the down town colonial area, the Anfa residential area and Corniche resort coast line.  Dinner and accommodation will be at Val D’anfa Hotel.

Day 02, June 1: Casablanca-Marrakech (150 miles,240km)

Following breakfast, you will start your journey southward to Marrakech. This unique city is located where the desert and mountains meet.  Known is the “Pearl of the South,” it was established in the 11th century by the Almoravide Dynasty. Later in the afternoon you will go on an introductory tour of monumental Marrakech featuring ramparts and gates, gardens and Jamaa el Fna square where you will enjoy a mint tea at the roofs of Café Argana overlooking the never ending entertainment of this square, Your day will end with dinner and a musical evening with Abd El Wahed Family and a group of Dekka Marrakchia, a part of cultural heritage going back to the Saadian Dynasty, Dakka Marrakchia (drumming) is considered as a musical genre for male groups and is produced by polyrhythmic percussion and choral chants.

Day 03,June 2: Marrakech

You will devote your morning to the exploration of Marrakech’s many historical sites, including the Saadian Tombs, the Dar Si Said Museum, the Bahia Palace, and the city’s focal point: the 12th century Koutoubia Minaret.  After lunch, you will have an opportunity to visit the souks, a plethora of alleyways with multicolored shops, and the Jamaa El Fna Square, where snake charmers, acrobats, and fortune-tellers put on a never-ending show. You will conclude your day with dinner and another evening of music with local Chaabi Band with the same local family.

Day 04,June 3: Marrakech – Ourika Valley (31miles, 50km)

The Ourika Valley spreads between the first foothills of the Atlas Mountains, extending along the Wadi River. Despite it being so close to Marrakech, this beautiful green valley is one of the most pristine valleys in Morocco. Enjoy a guided visit of an herb garden where you are served traditional mint tea by the local people. After lunch you will begin your afternoon with exploring the Ourika Valley, where you will visit the traditional Berber Souks, as well as a Jewish shrine. Then you will discover the workshops of the local artisans, enjoying their sophisticated, hand-made products.  You will return to your hotel for dinner. After your dinner , we’ll hike to a local Berber Villagr, An Ahouach of Ourika, local band will be present to offer you the best of its local Berber music.

Day 05, June 4: Ourika Valley – Ouarzazat (155miles, 250km)

Your journey today takes you through the small towns of Errachidia en route to Fez. Stop at Lac Aoua for lunch. This area is classic Berber country, the people being semi-nomadic, owning homes but, spending a great deal of time following their flocks. This drive takes approximately 5 hours. You will conclude your day with dinner at your Riad and the Festival’s evening events.

Day 09, June 8: Fez

Undeniably fascinating, Fez stimulates the senses with its haunting yet beautiful sounds, visual splendor, and evocative smells. The most ancient of imperial capitals and the most complete medieval city of the Islamic world, Fez is reminiscent of a city suspended in time, unfazed by the constantly evolving world outsides its walls, owing nothing to the Western world save electricity. Time spent in Fez will reveal much about the sophistication of the Moroccan artisan, providing an unparalleled learning experience to those who cross its path. Your morning will be spent visiting the Medina. You will break for lunch at a typical Moroccan restaurant and will continue to explore and shop for the remainder of the day. Return to Riad for dinner then you will have to choose between a Soufi Night with Jouad family or a transfer to Bab Makina for the festival concert.

Mugical Morocco -Extension- June 9-16/ 2013

The  World Sacred Music Festival in fes has been a wonderful experience in past, and is going to be very special this year with so many great musicians and events which I personally admire and interested in, including: Ck out more details http://www.fesfestival.com

After the 10 days tour of Morocco, filled with awaken senses of sitescolorssmells, views and explorations of variety music and “on the go”… I find that when arriving Fes, I liked to slow down the pace, have time for oneself to explore locally and enjoy the daily concerts. So, thatʼs how I planned the “Extension” to be: Weʼll be lodged in a very welcoming and cozy hotel or Riad close to where the concerts take place. Weʼll have mostly free and personal time to rest, to sit at a coffee shop or a restaurant and people watch, to wonder the Medina, the markets, to make local friends and each will choose the concerts they desire to attend. Weʼll have few day trips as in itinerary below (and expect changes) and if anyone is interested in visiting a certain place or event- weʼll do our best to accommodate you. (we can hire a driver and a guide for personal trips-for a fee.)
